Welcome to Poptalk

We all know that TV has changed. How we watch it is all over the place and quite frankly amazing. There is more content than ever to take in and I for one and am loving it. The problem is that while how we watch TV has changed, how we talk about it has stayed exactly the same. Social media as we know it does not allow for the intimacy we have when binging on our couch/living room/subway/classroom. In fact it is a disruption in the worst sense possible.

Watching TV isn’t as simple and fun as it used to be. In fact it has become quite confrontational.

And that is when the lightbulb went off. What if there was a safe place for us to go where we can share the experience properly. A place where we could talk about that episode with just the people we wanted to talk to. Maybe discover a new show that you didn’t know about. Everyone has a favourite TV show. Many of you already have a dialogue with me through texting/FB/Twitter/etc around what to watch. So it is a no-brainer when I capture this behaviour and provide a solution for you.

So without further ado..

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you:

What is Poptalk you ask?
The grand vision is to create a safe ecosystem where we can discuss and share the TV shows we love and devour on a weekly basis without fear of spoilers and other things that have ruined watching TV.

It’s about people sharing the experience of watching TV together no matter where they are in the world.

When it is all said and done, there will be an app that acts as the centre of a hub that will house all of our conversations around TV. With tools and mechanisms in place, I will get rid of spoilers, the issues with time-shifting as well as finding you new shows to watch (Strike Back anyone?)

Here is the thing, I don’t believe just an app will solve the problem. I believe that we are at a point where we want to not only consume the TV shows but all of the information around the show. Who was cast? Is it any good? Are the ratings holding up? Is it worth my time?
It all starts with a simple email.
For the last few months, I have been testing what has become The Poptalk TV Minute. It is the first step in creating this environment (that you and all the data I have been reading and gathering) that you are so longing for.

It will contain 3–5 links of stuff that I feel is important in helping you watch TV. Whether you are an avid TV watcher or a casual one, you will like the kind of news I put on.

The evolution of this email will be a journey we go on together as it might be better to send it out on Thursday. Are 6 links is better than 4? It will be refined with your help and turn into what I hope is one of the most important emails to be a part of if you like TV.

I am already very encouraged by it as not only am I extremely humbled by the fantastic feedback I have received on it in alpha testing, the list has grown organically by 30% since its launch through sheer word of mouth amongst those invited to the beta.

In the coming months I will announce the other things that will be launching on the way to the app, in the meantime my hope is that you enjoy this small but valuable first step.

Please feel free to head over to the email sign up page to join the list now. All the nerds are already doing it and you don’t want to be left out do you?

I am pleased and thrilled that you are a part of this with me. I hope that you stick around for awhile to see this grow. You have a ticket and first access to something that will change how we watch modern television.

Together we will create something special.
